$7 Lunch Challenge

Lunch was on me the first day of class, with a few caveats:
$7 limit
Must contain something to drink
Must contain at least one healthy item
Must contain carbs and protein

I got a frozen dinner of red curry chicken (protein) with water chestnuts, steamed kale (healthy), and jasmine rice (carbs), with water and a plum, for $6.  I was surprised to get something delicious, and to have a decent amount of food that wasn't junk food, for such a cheap price.

What did you get?  Did you pool your resources with others?  Did this exercise help you think differently, in any way, about how you choose food to eat or how you spend your food dollars?

  2. While the entire cooking class took a trip to shop rite for our cooking supplies, Mrs. Tuorto introduced the class to the $7.00 food challenge. Mrs. Tuorto provided $7.00 for each of us to get get a meal that contained a drink, something with protein, carbs, and something that was healthy. I decided to combine my $7.00 with one of my classmates Marco. After struggling to follow all the requirements that we needed to met the challenge, we ended up getting two Snapple drinks, one watermelon and one sweet tea, Marconi& cheese, collard greens and asparagus which counted as something healthy, chicken which counted as protein, and cornbread which was considered as our carbs. For desert we decided to get a box of Sara Lee's chocolate chip cookies/brownies which we shared with the rest of class. This challenge helped me think about all of the greasy, unhealthy food I have been eating over the months, and how much money I spent on it. It also made me think about how I could implement more things in my meals that are healthy and contain protein so that I can live a more healthy lifestyle.

  3. On the first day of cooking, Mrs. Tuorto gave us the $7 Lunch Challenge. The rules for the challenge were that we had $7 to get a drink and meal with carbs, protein, and something healthy. We were also given the option to pool money with other classmates. I pooled my money with sous-chef Geri, and we both got 2x4pc fried chicken, 2 loaves of bread, and yogurt. Geri got a Gatorade as his drink while I got 2 water bottles. The total came out to $13.86. Initially, it was difficult to find food because most of the options were only from a single food group. However, it became a lot easier when I pooled my money because it gave much more leeway to get larger units of food.

  4. On our thrilling trip to Shop Rite, Mrs. Tuorto introduced to us the $7 challenge. In this challenge I selected a container of fried chicken, peach Yoplait yogurt, and a can of Arnold Palmer. The challenge made me more self-aware of prices and the importance of carefully purchasing your products. We used the unit price as a guiding tool in deciding the better, more affordable product. I was surprised at how much I was able to buy on a limited budget.

  5. The $7 lunch challenge seemed impossible at first, but after looking around Shop Rite, I was surprised to find out that the challenge is possible. I got a Gatorade and a box of granola bars (containing nuts). I was not in the mood for meat therefore I decided to get an alternative instead. The challenge made me realize that it is possible to get a cheap yet healthy lunch that is satisfying.

  6. For the first day of class, our wonderful teacher, Mrs. Tuorto, treated the class and introduced us to the $7 lunch challenge. We had to get a meal that contained a drink, something with carbs and protein, as well as something healthy, for $7 or less. I got a plate of Rotisserie chicken for $3.99, a banana cream yogurt for 40 cents, and a bottle of coconut water for $1.20. I did not pool my money with anyone else because I wanted to challenge myself and see if I can complete the challenge on my own first. This exercise helped me to think differently because at first, I thought that eating healthy means you have to spend extra money. However, after this challenge, I realized that you do not have to spend a lot of money to have a decent, healthy meal.

  7. Mrs. Tuorto presented us with a challenge, a challenge that I accepted. The challenge is called the $7 challenge which essentially gives you a budget for lunch as well as some requirements. Those requirements being that you needed a drink along with some type of food with carbs and protein. This challenge inspired myself to each healthy for a change rather than just satisfying my hunger with any junk food I found. I grabbed a pack of granola bars, 2 bags of Quaker chips, and a Gatorade. This challenge made me think outside the box, and invest in my future health rather than just satisfying what I needed then.

  8. The 7$ lunch challenge was not as easy as I initially thought. Also, it was especially challenging for me because I don't eat meat. I saw that the rotisserie chickens were pretty cheap, but combining my budget with Farrad we decided to go a different route. We got a hot meal with chicken, collard greens, corn bread, mac & cheese and asparagus. This challenge showed me how difficult it was to eat on a budget. When your parents have food for you sometimes I forget that it costs something and it isn't always a given. It really opened my eyes to how people have to budget their resources to feed themselves and it must be especially crucial when yore also trying to feed a family.

  9. So I combined my money with Jefferson so we can get more good for the same price. We got 2 packages of the 3.99 chicken, already we were at $8. We needed something good for us and that was cheep so I thought of yogurt so we got 2 $0.40 cups of yogurt. We were doing well but we needed carbs and drinks, Jeff got 2 waters which were $1 each and I got a Gatorade. We knew that bread was cheap and carbs so we got 2 little $0.60 loaves of bread to finish the lunch time challenge. Our total was 13:87.
This exercise helped me to learn how to check the prices on everything to k ow if I am getting the best possible deal. Also helped to to know that I can get a pretty balanced meal for cheap.
