Well-Sweep Herb Farm

The rain held off during our yearly visit to Well-Sweep Herb Farm in Port Murray, NJ.  Mr. and Mrs. Hyde are amazing hosts; Mr. Hyde seems to know nearly everything about plants and their uses, letting us taste, touch, and smell all sorts of species, and Mrs. Hyde makes delicious creations from the herbs.  I look forward to our visit so much, even though I've been there many times; I learn many new things on each trip, and buying plants to add to my own gardens is always a treat.

What did you enjoy about the trip?  What is something interesting that you learned (or a few interesting things)?  What was the most surprising thing you saw or learned?

  1. I really loved this trip. From the start, I was impressed with Mr. Hyde's absolute knowledge of even the most basic plants. He started by picking up a weed called 'Pig's Ear' that I'd mowed a thousand times in my yard, and explained that the juice from it can be used to get rid of mosquito bites, bee stings, and poison ivy. I think the ting that hit me most was that every plant had a use and it made me wonder about all the things i didn't know about even the most mundane things around me in my everyday life, down to the weeds in my yard.

  2. Such an amazing trip! I love the fact that Mr. Hyde gave us a tour around the farm. I learned that the juice of a plant called Pig's Ear has so many uses to it such as to heal mosquito bites, bee stings... What suprised me the most is his ability to graft fruit trees. He would literally have the ability to change what types of apples or fruits that comes out of the tree which is amazing. He made it seem so simple but really its kind of difficult to complete. Overall I really enjoyed this new experience and learned many facts about different plants.

  3. I enjoyed our trip to the herb farm. Mr. Hyde was very informative about the plants in his herb farm. I learned about a plant that Jamaicans used for dreadlocks. Of course Mr. Hyde spoke to me at first since I have dreadlocks. He also told us about the many uses of the different plants and herbs. I learned was that the very leaves I see around New Jersey and New York in gardens and just on the street can be used to sooth mosquito bites, bee stings, poison ivy and many other types of insect bites. The most surprising thing I learned was that there are so many different types of plants that get their food by killing insects. I liked that it didn't rain... at least until we got back.

  4. It was a great pleasure to visit the herb farm, the smell of all the different plants filled the air and the breeze simply added to the beautiful day. What did I learn? Well a lot! Mr. Hyde is an amazing fellow, his knowledge of plants is unmatched. While the trip for us was going through his herb farm, I believe in his mind it was different. I believe for him he was going to his pharmacy or local food store. Mr. Hyde has taken all of his different plant and found uses for all of them, he even showed us how to find them in our backyards. It was truly a pleasure to go through his farm which was incredible, and having the honor to taste his wife's amazing treats. What i truly found amazing was one plant in particular. This small plant reflected moonlight and at night would appear to glow, when I heard this I could not help but say "Cool" his plants , his life, his open family, and his love for his profession truly made the trip one to remember.

  5. This place was awesome. The amount of knowledge to be attained from plants in a single garden is amazing. In general the visit was one huge surprise but to me the most surprising plants were the ones used for medical purposes. To think that one plant can help to cure fever and stave off migraines to me was Awesome. The herb farm was a hotbed of knowledge, and i learned all kinds of things, like a lot of plants smell like lemons for some reason, and the sheer amount of edible, everyday plants was staggering. This has got to be one of the best experiences i have ever had.
